Conditions

  • Optimal Flow: Around 7200 cub.meters/sec.
  • Beginner-Friendly Flow: In the upper 7000’s.
  • Low Water Conditions: More challenging to catch but offers better surf quality, becoming steeper as levels fall below 7900. At this point, the wave stops breaking.
  • Return Time: About a two-minute walk back to the lineup, which can get crowded.

Characteristics

  • Height: Waist to shoulder high.
  • Year-Round Flow: Caution is advised in winter due to ice in the river.
  • River Wave Excellence: Recognized as Montreal’s premier river wave.

Dangers

  • Swimming Skills Required: Strong swimming is essential.
  • Long Swim: Be prepared for a challenging swim in the rapids.
  • Whirlpool Hazard: Beware of the whirlpool behind the main wave, which requires a good swim back to shore.
  • Respect Cohabitation: Originally discovered by kayakers; be considerate as cohabitation is key to maintaining a good atmosphere.

Tips

  • Ideal Board Sizes: Boards under 7’2"
  • Recommended Boards: Wide boards with ample nose volume (ideal sizes 6’4" or 6’8"). A fish board is preferable over a high-performance board.
  • Protect Your Feet: Bring booties! The riverbed is rocky, and the walk back isn’t foot-friendly.
