The Welle Mühleschleuse, known as The Monster, lives up to its name not only due to its impressive power but also because of its tendency to cause injuries, snapped fins, and even broken surfboards. This spot should be approached with caution and is best suited for experienced river surfers only.
Surfing at the Mühleschleuse is like surfing a reef break in a shallow spot. The wave is situated just above the riverbed, with rocks jutting just below the water's surface on both sides of the wave, waiting to catch the unwary surfer. Injuries are a common occurrence, and moderate to severe accidents are a real possibility. Due to the nature of the spot, it is recommended to avoid nose dives, surf with caution around rocks and bridge pillars, and wear booties to protect against rocks and glass shards in the water.
Despite the risks, Mühleschleuse is located in a beautiful area, central to the old town and Bälliz, surrounded by bars and restaurants where surfers and spectators can relax and enjoy the action. There is ample space to lock up your bike right at the entrance, although there are only a few, time-limited, paid parking spaces nearby at Stadthofplatz.
The rear Mühle wave only works when there’s sufficient water flow, typically in the spring. This wave is also best suited for advanced river surfers, as it is located near shallow spots and very close to the bridge pillar, adding another layer of difficulty and danger.
